Knee Pain

With the knee being subject to significant weight-bearing responsibilities, it’s no wonder knee pain is so common. Inactivity, sporting injury, poor walking patterns, flat feet, age and even diet can all lead to knee pain. It’s also important to understand that knee pain may not be coming from the knee at all. Low back pain, hip pain, and even ankle problems can all refer pain to the knee. Advance Chiropractic & Acupuncture Clinic, Hertford uses comprehensive assessment procedures that find the cause of your knee pain. Our effective range of treatments can then help you get back on your feet again.

Knee pain can be so frustrating. Most of us have to move and usually have to use our knees to do so. Pain coming from the knee can therefore be constantly aggravated by movement and weight bearing, causing untold distress.

Painful KneeWhat Might be the Cause of My Knee Pain?

The knee is a complex joint and many things can go wrong. The following conditions are just some examples of problems we commonly see in practice:

  1. Osteoarthritis – arthritis due to age, wear and tear and sometimes injury or disease.
  2. Tendonitis – can affect the tendon at the front of the knee.
  3. Bursitis – can affect any of the many bursae (fluid-fillled sacs) surrounding the knee.
  4. Patello-Femoral Pain Syndrome – A knee alignment problem that more commonly affects females.
  5. Muscle imbalance – of the muscles surrounding the knee.
  6. Anterior Cruciate Ligament injury – ACL injury is quite common with knee twisting injury.
  7. Posterior Cruciate Ligament injury – PCL injury is less common than ACL injury, but does occur.
  8. Meniscus tears.
  9. Lateral and medial collateral ligament sprains and tears.

Sometimes pain in the area of the knee may not be coming from the knee at all. For example, it might be pain referred from another area, such as the low back or hip, or even ankle. It’s our job to firmly establish what the cause of your knee pain is. Our training and experience as a chiropractor means we’re highly skilled in this respect.

Close up view of woman holding a needle in an acupuncture therapyAt Advance Clinic Hertford, some patients come to us having already received a diagnosis for their knee pain, for example, from their GP. If you don’t have a diagnosis, don’t worry. It’s our responsibility to provide one.

Our many years of experience and careful assessment procedures mean we’re usually able to find the root cause of your knee pain. We’ll ask you detailed questions. This, together with the orthopaedic and neurological testing we carry out, is often enough to establish the cause.

On occasion, we may need to order an x-ray or MRI scan. We’ll let you know if this is the case. As a chiropractor, we’re qualified and skilled to interpret the results of any scans and/or x-rays you undergo or which you’ve already undergone.
